About Raleigh

Raleigh is North Carolina's capital and still lives up to its old nickname, the City of Oaks: a downtown of state government and historic squares that turns into a dining and music district in the evening, surrounded by tree-shaded older neighborhoods and newer ones farther out.

A lot of what sets Raleigh apart is free. The state's natural sciences and history museums face the State Capitol, and the North Carolina Museum of Art pairs its collection with a 164-acre park of trails and outdoor art. Dorothea Dix Park, 308 acres of open hills with skyline views, keeps adding to its list of things to do, from an adventure playground to large troll sculptures by artist Thomas Dambo. More than 100 miles of greenway trails link parks across the city, including the 27-mile Neuse River Trail.

NC State University gives the city a college-town energy, the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes play here, and outdoor concert season runs from spring into fall. Lake Johnson, Lake Wheeler and William B. Umstead State Park put water and woods a short drive from almost anywhere in town.
